Men lift logs with sticks during a ritual at Behdienkhlam which is the most important festival of the Jaintia Tribe (Pnar tribe) of Meghalaya. It is celebrated in mid-July every year after agricultural sowing is over. ('Khlam' means plague or pestilence and 'beh dien' means to drive away with sticks). Ceremonies and rituals are carried out over a three day period culminating in a gathering at a huge water filled pool in Jowai called 'Aitnar' where men dance and parade around carrying tall, decorated structures called 'Raths' and ceremonial tree trunks called 'Khnongs'. Location: Jowai, Jaintia Hills, Meghalaya, India
